History of Reading Success Lab

A Perfect Match

Students with headphones in the computer lab

In the late 1990s, James “Mike” Royer, Ph.D. was conducting research on listening and reading comprehension at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He became fascinated with the idea of a computer-based diagnostic tool that could discern the different types of reading problems he saw students grappling with and offer appropriate solutions.

Dr. Royer turned to his tennis partner and software developer, Jeremy Wise, Ph.D., and together, they built Reading Success Lab. At the time, Dr. Wise was a computer software developer in the sports industry. He had the intricate programming knowledge Dr. Royer needed, and their collaboration led to the launch of Reading Success Lab.

A Powerful New Reading Program

The sophisticated reading program—the results of which are published in leading academic journals—offers a tool to evaluate comprehension and discern the nature of individual reading issues; customized Reading Success Lab products address the concerns and can be used at home, in school, in tutoring settings, and in research laboratories.

What sets Reading Success Lab apart is that it is not phonics-based.

The program puts emphasis on word recognition, and the method is proven to improve both speed and accuracy. Reading Success Lab products serve a broad range of individuals—from early readers just learning to recognize words to high school biology, chemistry, and physics students who must master relevant academic vocabulary. Products you choose can be customized so that students are learning the material their teachers recommend. Built-in, frequent evaluations measure progress, creating confidence as well as success.

Whether your child or student has dyslexia, is on the autism spectrum, or is reading below grade level and experiencing difficulty with comprehension, Reading Success Lab’s tools can help.

Reading Success Lab products have been used over the past 15 years by many educational and psychological researchers, educators working in school settings and tutoring clinics, and parents working with their children at home. The system, which is widely used in Australian schools, has evolved significantly since it was first developed.

Drs. Royer and Wise continuously improve their products based on the needs, feedback, and requests of customers.

I always thank our lucky stars that we met you.
